Toronto woman guilty of drowning autistic daughter

A Toronto mother has been found guilty of drowning her four-year-old autistic daughter in a bathtub inside their Scarborough home.

A Superior Court jury returned its verdict Saturday morning after two days of deliberation.

Xuan Peng, a 36-year-old Chinese immigrant, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of her only daughter Scarlett Chen.





Sharp, Sony Team on Advanced LCD Panels

Sharp and Sony have reached a basic agreement to form an LCD manufacturing joint venture, in a move that continues a months-long realignment of key players in the LCD panel business.

The two companies aim to conclude a definitive deal by the end of September that will see a new LCD plant already under construction by Sharp taken over by the joint venture. The plant in Sakai in western Japan is being built at a cost of about ¥ 380 billion (US$3.5 billion), and under the joint venture plan Sony will shoulder 34 percent of the cost of the factory.





NEB boss takes reins in era of tough choices

Gaetan Caron is no stranger to the hot seat of Canada’s national energy regulator.

Before taking over the reins of the National Energy Board on Sept. 20, Charon was vice-chairman, rising to chairman and CEO after nearly 30 years as a staffer in the engineering department and then as a director.

Caron takes over the board at a time when it is faced with multibillion-dollar pipeline bitumen projects to the U.S. and while industry awaits a decision on the long-awaited Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline from the Arctic.
