Fossils Link Pre-Humans in West Europe to Earlier Date

27 03 2008

Excavations in a cave in the mountains of northern Spain have uncovered the oldest known remains of human ancestors in Western Europe, scientists reported Wednesday.

The fossils of a lower jaw and teeth, more than 1.1 million years old, were found in sediments along with stone tools and bones of animals that appeared to have been butchered. The remains have been attributed to the previously known species Homo antecessor, a possible ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans.

Chinese ambassador rejects criticisms on Tibet

27 03 2008

OTTAWA — China’s ambassador has rejected Canadian criticisms of his country’s actions in Tibet as uninformed, and called assertions of rights violations “irresponsible.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his government have reacted to China’s crackdown in Tibet by calling on the country to respect human rights and open dialogue with the Dalai Lama. However, Chinese Ambassador Lu Shumin warned yesterday against interference in his country’s internal affairs.

At a rare press conference in Ottawa, he said the Dalai Lama is a dishonest separatist who has been “lying for decades,” and is behind violent and criminal riots in China.

YouTube Feature Tells Video Creators When and Where a Clip Is Being Watched

27 03 2008

In a move to provide better data to its users, YouTube formally announced late Wednesday that it had added a free feature that will show video creators when and where viewers are watching their videos. With this, the company hopes to turn YouTube from an online video site into a place where marketers can test their messages, Tracy Chan, YouTube product manager, said.

This program, called YouTube Insight, provides a detailed view of a video’s popularity, both over time and geographically, broken down by state. (Internationally, YouTube Insight is not as insightful, providing only popularity by country.)

YouTube has provided basic analytical information to creators of videos since its introduction, including the number of views, the viewers’ ratings of the video, and the number of comments left. Advertisers received a slightly more sophisticated summary.

Candles will make fundraiser ‘magical’

Grateful mom Nancy Clark spent months organizing a major fundraiser for the Hospital for Sick Children. Then she learned her big night would collide with Earth Hour.

“I had it booked. The tickets were printed and then I saw the `60′ logo in the Toronto Star,” said the Oakville woman. “Everybody all over the world was planning to shut down their lights … And I was having a fundraiser. I was terrified.”

There was no way she could change the date for her second annual Do You Believe in Magic? event, her way of thanking the hospital and the team that three years ago saved the life of her now-18-year-old daughter.

Entertainment One set to be ‘top player’

27 03 2008

Entertainment One Ltd. is expected to announce Thursday it is buying the Canadian assets of Toronto-based rival ThinkFilm in a move that delivers the fast-rising company into the upper echelons of the industry from bit player in less than a year.

The acquisition of ThinkFilm’s Canadian operations from a U.S. owner who bought the company for an estimated $25-million two years ago is the biggest move yet for Entertainment One. The deal includes the rights to a library of 235 films, several of them Academy Award nominees and winners, and the rights to release forthcoming titles until 2010.

Entertainment One has now assembled the international rights to a library of more than 700 movies in a matter of months. The deal also comes as the landscape of the Canadian industry has changed more in the past year than it did in the previous decade.
