Beach goer takes chainsaw to fence

4 07 2008

A chainsaw wielding beach lover took matters into his own hands by cutting down a private fence that divided Balm Beach and outraged the local community.

“It’s a shock because we’ve worked hard over two years to work the proper channels on this issue and have never advocated any violence or destruction,” Save the Beaches spokesperson Doug Lorriman said of the July 29 incident.

“Some people feel so frustrated, they took it into their own hands,” Lorriman said.

The fence dividing the Tiny Beaches Road property of a private citizen from the rest of Balm Beach has been a hot topic in the area for years as local ratepayer associations worked to have the fence removed. The difficulty is that the owner of the home hasn’t broken any laws by erecting the fence, which prevents pedestrian traffic along the water’s edge.

“There needs to be political action on both municipal and provincial fronts and, until now, there hasn’t been either,” Lorriman said.
